Task: Film Poster

Task: Film Poster

For this task I will be working on creating a film poster for an existing film. To do this I will be using the programs Photoshop and Illustrator to help edit my ideas together to create a final piece. Once this task is complete i will output my poster making it  ready to be viewed on this blog.

I will be using the time in these workshops to plan and design my poster, at this moment in time I am planning on making my poster in a minimalist style. The reason I have chosen to go with this particular style is that I like the simple but effective look it gives to posters, as you could only edit one image onto the poster but people similar with the films would be able to recognise the film straight away.

The main guidelines for creating this film poster include:

  • Your poster should be A4. at 72dpi
  • A Title - should be in a standard font or free to create own typeface
  • A Byline - a line that helps 'sell' the film
  • A Main Image - can be a mix of different images, style and content
  • A Quote - poster should include a review quote

Minimalistic Poster Ideas

Here are a few Minimalistic poster ideas that I found on Google search that I would like to base my final poster design on. I like the Minimalistic style as it takes a iconic scene or object featured in a film, making it instantly recognisable by the audience. It is a simple yet effective style to use for film posters which is why i think it will be perfect to use for the movie I am creating my poster for.

Poster: Step-by-step Guide

Below is a step-by-step guide on how i made by Poster design -

To make my movie poster i used Photoshop to edit. As my poster
was to advertise the up and coming Minions movie i thought i
would use a Minimalistic style, so i made the poster a Minion.
Even though it may seem simple, this character well known from
the movies Despicable Me,  making it recognisable as soon as you see it.

I used the colours yellow and blue as they are the colours
of a Minion. I then edited in the eye and the mouth.

I then started testing out which text fonts i wanted to use and
if i wanted the title to be all in capital or lower-case letters.

I decided on my font and i went for typing it all in lower-case
letters as it makes it look my child-friendly and less serious.

When looking at my poster i thought the text looked quite flat so
i thought i'd play around with the 3D text option. I decided to keep
the 3D text as i thought it gave my poster a more profession look, instead
of everything looking flat and boring.

Here are two copies of my finished movie poster, i
was comparing the two to decide whether i preferred
the movie quote being at the top or at the bottom. I
decided to go with placing it at the top as i thought it
looked better featured under the text "They're back to
                                       take over the world".

My Finished Poster Design

This is my finished poster design. I chose to do my poster for the upcoming film Minions, most recognisable from the films Despicable Me.

Task: Logo Design

Logo Design

For this task we are to create a logo for a company. We are free to create and develop a logo unconstrained from an already existing brand identity, I will have to create a logo for a fictional company that has either appeared in a book, film or TV programme, using the software Adobe Illustrator.

Below is a funny video i found which pokes funs at the badly made logos that i want to avoid making -

Poster Design Ideas

I have chosen do make my logo to represent the Circus the in televsion programme American Horror Story. As the show is set in the 1950/60s I have looked up and found some examples which have that old type look, which I want my logo to resemble.

This is a poster for 'The Famous Cole' circus, I like the style of the text used as it obvious that it is from around the 50/60s, which is perfect for my logo.

I liked the effect that this poster has with the paper ripping, releasing everyone from the circus. I thought that effect would look good if i developed it into a logo.

Logo Design Sketches

When planning and designing my Logo i produced some sketches which i later went onto scanning in to use as part of my final design.
